Some projects come through the shop that remind us why craftsmanship still matters.

This Duesenberg dash panel was one of those projects.

Originally designed to be the centerpiece of one of America's most iconic luxury automobiles, the panel features an intricate engine-turned finish—a decorative pattern that became synonymous with high-end automobiles of the 1920s and 1930s. Recreating that look while delivering a flawless plated finish requires precision at every step.

The process began long before the final chrome was ever applied. Proper preparation is everything, especially on a part with dozens of openings, sharp edges, and a highly visible decorative surface. Any imperfection would stand out immediately once the plating process was complete.

The panel then moved through multiple plating stages, building layers that provide both corrosion resistance and the brilliant finish expected on a concours-quality restoration. Copper plating provided the foundation, allowing the surface to be refined before progressing through nickel and finally into chrome. Each stage required careful handling to preserve the crisp engine-turned pattern across the entire face of the panel.

One of the biggest challenges with a component like this is maintaining consistency.

The reflective finish highlights every detail, making uniform coverage and exceptional surface quality critical. Even the edges and gauge openings require the same level of attention as the larger visible surfaces.

The finished result speaks for itself. The bright, mirror-like finish enhances the intricate engine-turning, creating a dashboard that captures the elegance and craftsmanship that made Duesenberg automobiles legendary.

Projects like this are why we enjoy restoration work. Every part has a story, and helping preserve these historic vehicles means honoring the craftsmanship of the original builders while applying today's plating expertise to ensure they'll be admired for generations to come.

Whether it's a one-of-a-kind dashboard, trim component, or complete restoration, every project receives the same commitment to quality that classic automobiles deserve.
