’29–’31 Chevrolet Grille Shell

This original 1929–’31 Chevrolet grille shell arrived stripped down to raw brass, revealing both the advantages and challenges of working with the material. Brass is an excellent substrate for plating, but after decades of use, it can develop cracks, splits, dents, and inconsistencies that have to be addressed before it can ever receive a beautiful chrome finish. The first step was metal finishing the shell, using a large grinding disc to identify high and low spots across the face. Low areas were carefully tapped out from the backside, bringing the metal back toward its original shape while minimizing the amount of material that needed to be removed.
One of the advantages of working with raw brass is the ability to repair damage directly in the base metal. Cracks along the side of the shell were solder repaired, then sanded smooth before the surrounding area was air filed to eliminate waves and leave the surface flat. Once the initial metal finishing was complete, the shell was ready for its first trip through the plating line. It was thoroughly cleaned in an alkaline bath before being activated and lowered into the cyanide copper tank, where a thin base layer of copper sealed the brass. From there, it moved into acid copper, which provides a much heavier deposit and gives the polisher material to work with as he continues leveling the surface.
After additional air filing and hard blocking, the shell received another round of acid copper. This final copper layer provided the last opportunity to eliminate any remaining waves or inconsistencies. Once the surface was flawless, the shell was DA sanded and buffed to a mirror finish. That polished surface is more than just cosmetic—it allows the polisher to inspect the entire shell and confirm that the sides are flat, wave-free, and dent-free before the final nickel and chrome plating.
For each plating cycle, the shell was carefully racked using copper wire and weights to ensure it remained properly suspended in the tanks. Before nickel plating, technicians thoroughly cleaned the polished surface to remove any remaining impurities. The shell was then lowered into the nickel tank for the appropriate amount of time before being inspected and prepared for its final trip into the chrome tank. The emblem opening was plugged to ensure proper chrome coverage around the area, and after only a few minutes in the chrome solution, the shell emerged with a brilliant new finish.
The finished grille shell is a dramatic transformation from the cracked and imperfect brass piece that arrived at the shop. The repaired areas are completely invisible, the sides are straight and wave-free, and the chrome brings out the intricate shape of this early Chevrolet piece. It is a great example of what careful metal finishing, copper plating, polishing, nickel, and chrome can do to bring an original piece of automotive history back to life.
