This rear bumper from a 1970 Oldsmobile 442 arrived with previous modifications that added an extra level of complexity to the restoration process. After being electro-stripped to bare metal and glass bead blasted, the bumper was carefully inspected and prepared for metal finishing.
Grinding, air filing, and hand blocking were used to reveal and correct waves, low spots, and surface imperfections. Because of the modified areas, the bumper received an initial copper plating to aid in repairs. Solder was then applied where needed and carefully shaped to restore the bumper's original contours.
Following the repairs, the bumper underwent multiple rounds of copper plating, sanding, and refinement to achieve a perfectly straight and consistent surface. Once the desired finish was achieved, the bumper was polished to a mirror shine and prepared for final plating.
The final stages included nickel plating, chrome plating, and a thorough quality inspection. Despite the challenges presented by the previous modifications, all evidence of the alterations was eliminated during the restoration process.
The result is a flawless, show-quality bumper with deep reflection, crisp lines, and a finish that looks better than new.
