Restorations

Restoring your plated parts to like new condition is much more than just dipping the part into a chrome tank. In order to get the results you expect, our plating experts go to great lengths to make sure your parts are as perfect as possible.

Follow along below to see how we restore your grilles and bumpers!

Bumper Restoration

 Stripping

BEFORE ANY WORK BEGINS THE BUMPER IS STRIPPED 100% TO THE BARE METAL. ALL OLD CHROME, NICKEL, COPPER, RUST, EVER-THING IS REMOVED. PLATING OVER ANY OLD MATERIAL CAN LEAD TO PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE NEW PLATING.

 Straightening and Dent Removal

SMALL DENTS ARE HAMMERED OUT BY HAND. FOR LARGE DENTS AND FOR STRAIGHTENING PURPOSES A HYDRAULIC PRESS IS USED.

 Grinding and Crack Repair/Filling Holes

AFTER THE BUMPER IS STRAIGHT & DENTS ARE REMOVED, THE PART IS READY FOR THE FIRST STAGE OF GRINDING. THIS REMOVES MOST OF THE PITS & IMPERFECTIONS IN THE METAL. CRACKS AND HOLES ARE REPAIRED USING BRASS. IF YOU ARE WELDING THE BOLTS IN FROM THE BACK SIDE HAVE THEM WELDED BEFORE SENDING TO US. DO NOT DRESS DOWN THE WELD ON THE FACE, LEAVE THE BEAD FOR US TO GRIND DOWN.

 Polishing

USING A SERIES OF DIFFERENT GRIT DISCS ON A DA POLISHER, THE METAL IS SANDED/POLISHED AND PREPPED TO RECIEVE PLATING. AT THIS TIME, MOST IMPERFECTIONS ARE REMOVED WITHOUT DISTORTING OR WAVING THE METAL. DURING THIS PROCESS AN AIRFILE AND HAND BLOCK WILL ALSO BE USED TO ENSURE THE METAL IS FLAT AND FREE OF WAVES. ANY REMAINING IMPERFECTIONS WILL BE REMOVED IN COPPER PLATING AND POLISHING PROCESS.

 Copper

DEPENDING ON THE COMPOSITION OF THE BUMPER, WE MAY USE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF COPPER. THE FIRST IS A CYANIDE COPPER THAT IS USED FOR A BASE WHEN LEADER SOLDER FILLING AREAS THAT ARE UNABLE TO BE STRAIGHTENED OR REPAIRED THROUGH TRADITIONAL METHODS. THE CYANIDE COPPER BASE ALSO ALLOWS FOR DESIRED ADHESION OF THE REPAIRS. ONCE THE REPAIRS ARE MADE, THIS IS FOLLOWED WITH MULTIPLE TRIPS THROUGH ACID COPPER PLATING, WHICH IS USED TO FILL IMPERFECTIONS AND TO BUILD UP THE PART FOR SANDING AND BLOCKING. THIS PROCESS IS MUCH LIKE USING PRIMER IN PAINTING. IF NO REPAIRS ARE NEEDED AFTER THE INITIAL GRIND AND POLISH, THE BUMPER WILL GO STRAIGHT TO ACID COPPER SKIPPING THE CYANIDE COPPER BASE. ONCE ALL THE IMPERFECTIONS ARE REMOVED WITH ACID COPPER THE BUMPER IS BUFFED TO A MIRROR FINISH BEFORE NICKEL AND CHROME PLATING.

 Nickel

AFTER THE COPPER IS POLISHED AND ALL THE IMPERFECTIONS HAVE BEEN REMOVED, THE BUMPER IS NICKEL PLATED. AFTER THE BUMPER IS NICKEL PLATED. IF THERE ARE IMPERFECTIONS FOUND THE BUMPER WILL BE RE-POLISHED OR NICKEL BUFFED, FOLLOWED BY RE-NICKEL PLATING.

 Chrome

AFTER THE BUMPER IS NICKEL PLATED AND IS FREE OF IMPERFECTIONS ITíS READY TO BE CHROME PLATED IN HEXAVALENT CHROME. AFTER CHROME PLATING IF ANY IMPERFECTIONS ARE FOUND THE CHROME IS STRIPPED OFF AND THE BUMPER GOES BACK THROUGH THE PROCESS OF NICKEL BUFFING, RE-NICKEL PLATING, AND FINALLY CHROME PLATING FOR THE FINISHING TOUCH.

Grille Restoration

 Stripping

BEFORE ANY WORK BEGINS, GRILLES ARE STRIPPED 100%. ALL OLD PAINT, PLATING, RUST & ROAD GRIME IS REMOVED. PLATING OVER ANY OLD MATERIAL CAN CAUSE PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE NEW PLATING. THE REQUIREMENT OF ADDITIONAL REPAIR SOMETIMES APPEARS AFTER A GRILLE HAS BEEN STRIPPED. THIS USUALLY INVOLVES THE DISCOVERY OF CRACKS, DENTS, OR OTHER DAMAGE THAT WAS NOT VISIBLE BEFORE BEING STRIPPED. THIS CAN LEAD TO ADDITIONAL REPAIR CHARGES. IF THIS OCCURS WE WILL NOTIFY YOU BEFORE WE MAKE THE REPAIRS TO GET YOUR APPROVAL.

 Polishing

THE FIRST STAGE OF POLISHING/SANDING IS USUALLY A LIGHT POLISH WITH A DA OR GRINDER TO REMOVE MINOR IMPERFECTIONS. HOWEVER, WE DO NOT GRIND DEEP PITS AS THIS WOULD DISTORT THE METAL. DEEP PITS AND IMPERFECTIONS WILL BE FILLED AT A LATER STAGE IN THE COPPER PROCESS WITH COPPER PLATING OR LEAD SOLDER IF NECESSARY. AT THIS POINT THE GRILLE IS READY TO BE PLATED WITH A CYANIDE COPPER BASE.

 Cyanide Copper

BEFORE ANY REPAIR WORK IS PERFORMED, THE GRILLE IS PLATED WITH A THIN CYANIDE COPPER BASE TO SEAL THE METAL AND PROVIDE A BASE COAT FOR THE REPAIR WORK TO ADHERE TO.

 Repair

AFTER THE GRILLE HAS BEEN CYANIDE COPPER PLATED WE USE LEAD SOLDER TO REPAIR CRACKS, FILL HOLES, BUILD UP LOW SPOTS, AND REBUILD EDGES. ONCE THE REPAIR WORK IS COMPLETE THE GRILLE IS RE-PLATED WITH CYANIDE COPPER AND THEN FOLLOWED WITH ACID COPPER PLATING.

 Acid Copper

AFTER REPAIR WORK IS COMPLETE THE GRILLE IS ACID COPPER PLATED. WE USE ACID COPPER TO BUILD UP THE PART TO FILL IN IMPERFECTIONS, AFTER BEING COPPER PLATED THE EXCESS COPPER IS REMOVED BY POLISHING. WHERE THEREíS ENOUGH ROOM BETWEEN FINS, WE CAN POLISH THE SIDES OF THE FINS AS SMOOTH AS THE FACE. THIS PROCESS OF COPPER PLATING AND POLISHING WILL BE REPEATED UNTIL IMPERFECTIONS ARE REMOVED. ONCE ALL THE IMPERFECTIONS THAT CAN BE BE REMOVED ARE REMOVED, THE GRILLE WILL BE BUFFED TO A MIRROR FINISH BEFORE NICKEL AND CHROME PLATING.

 Nickel

AFTER THE ACID COPPER HAS BEEN POLISHED AND THE IMPERFECTIONS REMOVED THE GRILLE IS NICKEL PLATED. IF IMPERFECTIONS ARE FOUND AFTER BEING NICKEL PLATED THE NICKEL GETS RE-POLISHED AND RE-NICKEL PLATED. THIS PROCESS CONTINUES UNTIL ALL IMPERFECTIONS THAT CAN BE REMOVED HAVE BEEN REMOVED.

 Chrome

ONCE ALL IMPERFECTIONS THAT CAN BE REMOVED ARE REMOVED THE GRILLE IS CHROME PLATED IN HEXAVALENT CHROME. ONCE AGAIN, IF AFTER BEING CHROME PLATED ANY IMPERFECTIONS ARE DISCOVERED THE CHROME WILL BE STRIPPED OFF AND THE GRILLE WILL GO BACK THROUGH THE PROCESS OF NICKEL BUFFING, RE-NICKEL PLATING, AND FINALLY CHROME.

Pot Metal Restoration

 Stripping

BEFORE ANY WORK BEGINS, ALL POTMETAL PIECES ARE STRIPPED 100%. ALL OLD PLATING, RUST, PAINT (IF PRESENT), & GRIME IS REMOVED. PLATING OVER ANY OLD MATERIAL CAN CAUSE PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE NEW PLATING. THE REQUIREMENT OF ADDITIONAL REPAIR SOMETIMES APPEARS AFTER A PART HAS BEEN STRIPPED. THIS USUALLY INVOLVES THE DISCOVERY OF CRACKS OR OTHER DAMAGE THAT WAS NOT VISIBLE BEFORE BEING STRIPPED. THIS CAN LEAD TO ADDITIONAL REPAIR CHARGES. IF THIS OCCURS WE WILL NOTIFY YOU BEFORE WE MAKE THE REPAIRS TO GET YOUR APPROVAL.

 Polishing

THE FIRST STAGE OF POLISHING/SANDING IS USUALLY A LIGHT POLISH WITH A DA OR SPECIALLY MADE HAND TOOLS TO REMOVE MINOR IMPERFECTIONS. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT WE DO NOT GRIND DEEP PITS AS THIS WOULD DISTORT THE PART. DEEP PITS AND IMPERFECTIONS WILL BE FILLED AT A LATER STAGE IN THE COPPER PROCESS WITH COPPER PLATING OR LEAD SOLDER IF NECESSARY. AT THIS POINT THE PART IS READY TO BE PLATED WITH A CYANIDE COPPER BASE.

 Acid Copper

AFTER REPAIR WORK IS COMPLETE THE PART IS ACID COPPER PLATED.
